Tony Todd, Veteran Actor Known for ‘Candyman’ Franchise, Dies at 69



Tony Todd, the celebrated actor who brought to life the iconic character in the original “Candyman” horror films, has passed away at the age of 69.

Todd’s talent agent, Dede Binder of the Defining Artist agency, confirmed his death to CNN on Saturday, though no further details were immediately available.

Best known for his chilling role as Daniel Robitaille, or “Candyman,” a vengeful figure who appears when his name is repeated five times before a mirror, Todd first portrayed the character in the 1992 film based on a 1985 Clive Barker short story. He later reprised the role in the 2021 reboot directed by Nia DaCosta.

Todd’s career spanned multiple genres, with one of his earliest film credits as Warren in Oliver Stone’s Oscar-winning movie Platoon (1986). He also appeared in Clint Eastwood’s Bird (1988), Lean on Me (1989), and The Rock (1996), but horror remained his forte.

Aside from Candyman, Todd became known in the horror world through his portrayal of Bludworth in the Final Destination series and roles in films such as Night of the Living Dead (1990), The Crow (1994), and Hatchet (2006). Embracing his status as a beloved figure in Black horror cinema, he told The New York Times in 2020, “You can label me however you want. I know who I am,” reflecting on his strong connection with the genre and its fans.

Beyond film, Todd had a robust television career, featuring in recurring roles in Scream: The TV Series on MTV, Chuck on NBC, 24 on Fox, and The Young and the Restless on CBS. He also appeared in several roles within the Star Trek universe and was a prolific voice actor in shows like The Flash on CW and Transformers Prime.

A classically trained actor, Todd frequently returned to the theater, having earned a master’s degree from the Trinity Repertory Company and further training at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center.
