In a recent report on the 8 Most Promising Robotics Stocks According to Hedge Funds, Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) emerged as a key player. This article explores Tesla’s standing within the top robotics stocks and its ambitious venture into robotaxis.
The Growing Service Robotics Industry
Once seen as a threat to human jobs, the robotics industry has shifted focus toward enhancing human productivity and automating tasks to boost efficiency. With the rise of AI, especially following the launch of tools like ChatGPT, companies are increasingly adopting generative AI and robotics in sectors such as hospitality, agriculture, professional cleaning, automotive, and healthcare.
According to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), professional service robot sales surged by 30% worldwide in 2023, with Asia-Pacific leading in sales, accounting for 80% of global robotics sales or roughly 162,284 units. The transportation and logistics sector saw significant growth, with 113,000 units built—a 35% year-over-year increase. This demand stems partly from a shortage of skilled labor, as noted in IFR’s 2024 report. Tesla’s robotaxi initiative, led by Elon Musk, is poised to be a transformative force in outdoor automation and the robotics sector at large.
The hospitality industry also made strides, selling over 54,000 units of mobile guidance, information, and telepresence robots in 2023. Agricultural robots and cleaning robots saw sales of 20,000 and 12,000 units, up 21% and 4%, respectively, with 70% of cleaning robots dedicated to floor cleaning. In the medical sector, robotics sales grew by 36% to nearly 6,100 units, with the highest demand in surgical and diagnostic robots, which saw year-over-year growth of 14% and 25%.
The U.S. Robotics Market
The U.S. leads globally in the production of service and medical robots, home to nearly 199 companies—66% of which manufacture professional service robots, 27% consumer service robots, and 12% medical robots. China follows with 107 manufacturers, while Germany ranks third with 83 companies. Bill Gates recently highlighted several “cutting-edge robotics startups,” including Agility Robotics, which specializes in humanoid robots for logistics.
Tesla stock ($TSLA) recently experienced a substantial rally following the results of the 2024 election. Closing just over $251 on November 5, the stock soared 27.8% by the end of the week to exceed $321, pushing Tesla’s market cap over $1 trillion for the first time since April 2022.
